MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina – Freshman forward
Delaney Dawes scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute as the College of Charleston rallied to defeat Colonial Athletic Association-leading UNCW in overtime, 3-2, at soggy Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point on Thursday afternoon.
The win elevated the Cougars' record to 3-11-3 overall and 2-5-1 in the CAA. The Seahawks, meanwhile, stand 10-3-1 overall with a 6-2-0 mark in league play.
After UNCW forced overtime with two goals in the second half, Charleston secured the victory in the closing minutes of the first overtime period. Junior midfielder
Jenna Snead sent a pass into the penalty area, which was headed in by Dawes past sophomore goalkeeper
Blair Barefoot for the victory.
Freshman forward
Faith Slimmer got the scoring started for the Cougars in the sixth minute when she sent a long shot to the far post that sailed past freshman goalkeeper
Kaylie Bierman.
Just under three minutes later, graduate student forward
Leah Deutsch extended the advantage when she took a pass from junior forward
Olivia Freitas and ripped a shot from the top of the penalty area past a diving Bierman.
Fifth-year senior forward
Audrey Harding ended the Cougars' shutout bid with 23:59 remaining in the second half with a long run toward the middle before unleashing a shot from the top of the penalty area that found the left side of the goal.

Lauren Reichardt was called for a handball to set up a free kick outside the penalty area. Sophomore midfielder
Madison Henry took the attempt from 25 yards and blasted a shot past freshman
Savannah Barron to even the score.
Bierman and Barefoot combined to make four saves for the Seahawks, who outshot Charleston by a 20-13 margin.
Graduate student
Meredith Holton registered six saves in the first half and overtime period for Charleston while Barron added one save in the second half.
UNCW and Charleston close the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 31 with noon contests. The Seahawks welcome Towson to the UNCW Soccer Stadium, while the Cougars visit Hofstra.
