HARRISONBURG, Virginia – In its nearly 30-year women's soccer history, UNCW has not enjoyed many winning moments during visits to long-time rival James Madison.
Freshman forward
Kayla Burroughs' first career brace made sure the Seahawks left Sentara Park on Sunday afternoon with plenty of smiles after a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Dukes.
The Seahawks, who won for just the second time in 15 all-time visits to Harrisonburg, vaulted to the top of the CAA standings with a 5-1-0 mark while upping their overall record to 9-2-1. James Madison, meanwhile, dipped to 5-8-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the CAA following its third loss in the last four games.
It didn't take long for Burroughs to make an impact in the game, striking for two goals in the opening nine minutes to build the Seahawks' early 2-0 advantage. The Asheboro, N.C., product, converted passes from junior forward
Jordan Faveri and graduate student forward
Audrey Harding in the sixth minute before adding her second goal off a Harding feed just over three minutes later.
Harding followed in the 28th minute by finishing a Settin pass for her team-leading seventh goal of the year, upping the margin to 3-0.
James Madison ended the Seahawks' shutout bid with 12:19 remaining in regulation when senior midfielder
Iris Rabot scored her first goal of the year on a penalty kick past sophomore goalkeeper
Blair Barefoot.
Barefoot and freshman goalkeeper
Kaylie Bierman teamed up to make five saves in the win for UNCW, which was outshot by a 13-9 margin. Barefoot registered two saves in the second half after Bierman opened the game with three saves.
Redshirt sophomore
Alexandra Blom made one save in a losing effort for James Madison.
The Seahawks, who have played four of their last five games on the road, return to the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 24, to host Delaware for a noon CAA contest. James Madison begins a two-game road swing on Thursday, Oct. 21 at Charleston.
