Seahawks Fall to Drexel in Weekend Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior guard Hannah Nihill paced three Drexel players in double figures with a game-high 13 points as the Dragons completed a sweep of their Colonial Athletic Association weekend series against UNCW with a 61-34 victory over the Seahawks at Trask Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
 
The win elevated the Dragons' record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the CAA. UNCW dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the circuit following its fourth straight setback.
 
Nihill, who netted 18 points in the Dragons' win on Saturday, converted 6-of-13 shots from the field while adding three rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Kayla Bacon added 12 points while junior guard Maura Hendrixson chipped in 11 points with five rebounds and a game-high six assists.
 
Senior forward Carol-Anne Obusek narrowly missed earning a double-double for UNCW, scoring nine points while matching her career high with 13 rebounds. Junior guard Za'Nautica Downs paced the Seahawks offensively with 11 points.
 
Key Moment: Trailing by a 16-14 margin early in the second quarter, Drexel scored 12 of the next 15 points to claim a 26-19 lead with 2:33 remaining. The Dragons continued to build the advantage and led by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter.  
 
Game Notes:
  • Drexel extended its series win streak over UNCW to 20 straight games after the weekend sweep … The Dragons now lead the all-time series by a 29-8 margin.
  • The Seahawks outrebounded Drexel by a 41-37 margin, marking the fourth time in eight games this year UNCW has held the advantage on the glass.
  • UNCW committed 12 personal fouls against Drexel … The Seahawks have tallied fewer fouls than their opponent in all eight contests this season.
  • The Seahawks matched their season high with three blocked shots.
  • Obusek had her streak of six consecutive double-digit scoring efforts snapped after being held to just nine points … The Cary, N.C., native registered her third double-digit rebounding performance of the season with the 13 caroms.
  • Freshman guard Sallie Vick made the first start of her college career against Drexel … The Wilmington, N.C., product played 18 minutes and grabbed a rebound with an assist.
  • Freshman guard Taylor Webster played all 40 minutes for the Seahawks.
  • Downs has registered four consecutive double-digit scoring efforts with the 11-point performance against Drexel.
Up Next: UNCW embarks on its first CAA road weekend of the season next week when they visit James Madison for a pair of games at the new Atlantic Union Bank Center. The Seahawks and the Dukes will square off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, and Sunday, Jan. 10.
