Diamond Hawks Take Finale, 4-3


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Senior Luke Gesell delivered another strong start, allowing one run over six innings, as UNCW averted a series sweep on Sunday with a 4-3 win over Memphis at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks and Tigers both stand at 10-5 following the weekend series.

Gesell (3-1) tied his season-high with six strikeouts, walked on and scattered five hits. Blake Deatherage notched his third save of the season.

Trevor Marsh and Cole Weiss both collected a pair of hits.

Ben Brooks and Braden Webb each collected three hits for the Tigers, who held a 10-6 advantage in hits. Both knocked in runs.

Starter Blake Wimberley (2-1) suffered the loss. The righthander allowed two runs, one earned, over five innings.

Up next: The Seahawks continue their homestand on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. start against East Carolina.

Scoring:
T3: Webb led off the inning with a double and scored two batters later on Brooks single to center for a 1-0 Tiger lead.
B3: UNCW answered in the bottom half of the inning when Marsh scored from third on a throwing error by Memphis.
B4: Jac Croom scored on a wild pitch to give UNCW its first lead of the series, 2-1.
B6: UNCW added a run on a wild pitch and a second Memphis error to build a 4-1 lead.
T9: Memphis drew to with in 4-2 on a RBI single by Webb and pinch runner Ian Bibiloni scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game.

Inside the box score: UNCW did not have an RBI in the game … Croom stole a pair of bases in the fourth inning and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch … The Seahawks drew six walks on the afternoon …UNCW pitching walked on and struck out 10.
