Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brandon Sans

Balanced Attack Keys Homecoming Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Six players scored during a 17-3 run midway through the second half to push UNCW past William & Mary, 70-64, in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action at lively Trask Coliseum Saturday night.

The Seahawks, playing in front of a raucous homecoming crowd, snapped a three-game losing streak to move to 8-18 and 3-10 in conference play. The Tribe has lost four of its last five games and fell to 16-10 and 8-5 in the CAA.

"It was just great fight by our guys," said Rob Burke, seven games into a stint as the club's interim head coach. "I challenged them this morning. We got down early, but came back.

"Our guys bent, but didn't break. After Thursday (a 62-56 loss to Elon), we got up and went back at it. We have great camaraderie on our team and I'm really proud of our guys.

Junior forward Mike Okauru led the Seahawks in scoring for the fourth time with 15 points. The Florida transfer was joined in double figures by junior guard Ty Gadsden (14) and redshirt sophomore forward Marten Linssen (10).

W&M was paced by senior forward Nathan Knight's 42nd career double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Senior forward Andy Van Vliet and freshman guard Miguel Ayesa pour in 12 points each, while junior guard Luke Loewe had 10.

The Seahawks trailed by as many as 14 points early in the first half, but rallied to close the gap to 35-34 at halftime, setting up their decisive run midway in the final period. UNCW avenged a 79-63 loss to the Tribe in the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 9 in Williamsburg.

W&M still led, 45-41, on Knight's second dunk of the game at the 14:12 mark. UNCW then cranked out 10 unanswered points to start the 17-3 swing and take the lead for good.

Sophomore guard Brian Tolefree's and-one with 7:44 remaining capped the run and matched the team's largest lead of the game, 64-54.

Knight, who was limited to 20 minutes due to four fouls, scored four of six straight Tribe points to trim the lead to 64-60 with 54 seconds remaining. Okauru and Gadsden then splashed three free throws each in the waning moments to seal the homecoming victory with eight ticks on the clock.

The Tribe hit nine of its first 12 shots to take a 20-11 lead at the 12:12 mark, including two spurts of five consecutive points. Van Vliet jumpstarted a 9-0 run with a pair of three-pointers over 30 seconds that made it a 14-point W&M lead, 29-15, at the 8:34 of the first half.

The Seahawks then employed a full-court press that forced 10 turnovers and limited the Tribe to two field goals over the final 8:34 of the first half. An Okauru layup capped a 8-0 run to give UNCW a brief 34-33 lead with 1:19 left in the first half before graduate guard Bryce Barnes responded with a layup on the other end to give W&M a 35-34 edge at the break.

The Seahawks travel north next week for the final road trip of the regular season against Northeastern (Feb. 13) and Hofstra (Feb. 15).
