Blue Hens Hand Seahawks Loss In Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Six players reached double figures in a balanced offensive attack as Delaware cruised past UNCW, 82-65, in the Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball regular season finale for both teams on Saturday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks finished at 10-21 and 5-13 in CAA play during the regular season. The Blue Hens snapped a two-game losing skid to wind up 21-10 and 11-7.

UNCW will be the No. 9 seed in next week's Hercules Tires CAA Men's Basketball Championship and face No. 8 Drexel at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the Sports & Entertainment Arena in Washington, D.C. Delaware is the No. 5 seed and meets No. 3 Towson-Charleston in the 2:30 p.m. matchup on Sunday, March 8.

The Seahawks, who had a two-game winning streak snapped, were paced by sophomore forward Marten Linssen's 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting. The Valparaiso transfer was joined in double figures by junior guard Ty Gadsden (14) and freshman guard Shykeim Phillips (12).

Junior guard Kevin Anderson's all-around performance of 14 points, six rebounds, and eight assists anchored Delaware's attack. Junior guard Ryan Allen, junior guard Nate Darling and sophomore forward Justyn Mutts each had 13 for the Blue Hens. Senior forward Jacob Cushing chipped in 11, while redshirt junior forward Dylan Painter added 10.

"I was really impressed with Delaware," said UNCW interim head coach Rob Burke. "I thought they were pretty good back in December. They have poise, pace and an understanding of how to play. They just share the ball together.

"They play the game the right way. We just could not get enough stops in the second half or score to get into our press. We just stopped scoring. Coach Ingelsby has done a great job with them."

Delaware took a 41-40 lead at the break after Mutts scored on a dunk at the halftime buzzer and used 68.2 percent in the second half to blitz the Seahawks. The Blue Hens outscored UNCW, 41-25, in the final 20 minutes to sweep the regular season series for the third straight year.

After scoring 11 points in the first half, Gadsden drew his fourth foul at the 15:49 mark of the second period and Delaware capitalized. The Blue Hens cranked out a 14-5 run that turned a back-and-forth game into a 67-56 advantage with 8:23 remaining.

A Linssen layup cut the deficit back to single digits, 67-60, with 6:44 to go before the Blue Hens used a 13-3 run to take a commanding 80-63 lead with 1:17 to go. The Seahawks were held without a field goal in the final 4:39 of the game and missed eight of their final nine field goal attempts.

Gadsden opened the game with a baseline jumper in an entertaining first half that featured nine ties and 13 lead changes. The two CAA rivals combined to make 50.7 percent of their shots, including seven three-pointers by the Blue Hens in the opening period.

With the game knotted at 16-all, the Blue Hens sank four straight three-pointers over a four-minute span, including back-to-back splashes by Darling and Cushing, to give Delaware a 28-25 lead with 8:33 showing in the first half.

UNCW rattled off a 9-1 spurt in the ensuing three minutes to take the largest lead of the opening half, 34-29, on a layup by junior guard Mike Okauru with 5:32 left.

With the Seahawks holding a 40-39 lead in the final seconds before halftime, Anderson tossed a lob that was slammed by Mutts as time expired to give the Blue Hens a 41-40 advantage at the intermission.

The Seahawks will square off against Drexel for the third time this season in the 2020 Hercules Tires CAA Championship beginning on March 7 in Washington, D.C.
