Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Eric Rhew

Seahawks Soar Past Charleston, 74-50

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW used a season-high 23 points from senior guard Ahyiona Vason and a strong shooting performance to end a five-game losing streak with a 74-50 rout of the College of Charleston in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action inside Trask Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

The win lifted the Seahawks' record to 7-18 overall and 4-10 in the CAA. Charleston, meanwhile, dipped to 11-14 on the season with an identical 4-10 mark in the circuit.

Vason, who led the Seahawks in scoring for the third time in the last four games, sank 10-of-16 shots from the floor and was perfect in three trips to the free throw line. The Montgomery, Ala., product also dished out three assists and had four steals.

Senior guard Lacey Suggs joined Vason in double figures after contributing 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field along with a 3-for-4 showing at the charity stripe. She also had four rebounds and four steals while playing a team-high 34 minutes.

Junior forward Carol-Anne Obusek just missed recording a double-double after scoring eight points with a career-high 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Charleston, which suffered its fourth consecutive loss, was paced by 16 points off the bench from sophomore guard Latrice Perkins. Sophomore forward Arynn Eady chipped in eight points with a team-high 11 rebounds.

Key Moment: The Seahawks, who never trailed in the game, broke out of the gate quickly and scored 22 of the game's first 30 minutes to set the tone. Vason led the charge by scoring eight of her points during the outburst while Suggs added six points of her own.

Game Notes:
  • UNCW has now won six of the last eight pairings against Charleston and holds a 15-13 advantage in the all-time series … The Seahawks also own a slim 7-6 lead in games played in Wilmington.
  • The Seahawks ended a five-game home losing streak with Sunday's victory … It was UNCW's first win on the Trask Coliseum floor since opening CAA play with a 71-65 overtime victory over Delaware on Jan. 3.
  • UNCW outrebounded Charleston by a 42-30 margin, marking the first time the Seahawks have held the edge on the glass since Jan. 10 at William & Mary.
  • The Seahawks also outscored Charleston by a 52-24 margin in paint points … The 52 points in the paint match a season high for UNCW, which also had 52 paint points against Mount Olive on Nov. 20.
  • UNCW earned its third wire-to-wire victory of the season … The Seahawks also never trailed in victories over South Carolina State and Presbyterian.
  • The Seahawks shot 51.9 percent from the field against Charleston, marking the team's best effort from the field since a 54.3 percent (25-for-46) effort at Hofstra on Jan. 31.
  • Vason recorded the second 20-point game of her college career … She finished just one point shy of her career high, which she set against Northeastern in last year's CAA Tournament.
  • Vason has reached double figures in scoring in eight of her last 10 games.
  • Suggs, who authored her 17th double-digit scoring effort of the season, increased her career total to 984 points while moving into 17th place on the Seahawks' all-time scoring list.
  • Sophomore forward Jessica Mitchell scored a career-high six points in Sunday's victory, converting all three of her field goal attempts.
  • The Seahawks only attempted six three-point field goals in Sunday's game against Charleston, all of which came in the second half … The six attempts are the fewest for UNCW in a game since Jan. 13, 2017, when they tried six trifectas against Drexel.
  • UNCW Coach Karen Barefoot earned the 350th victory of her head coaching career.
Up Next: UNCW continues its three-game homestand on Friday, Feb. 28, by welcoming Northeastern to Trask Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Seahawks will be aiming to even the season series after the Huskies won, 63-61, on Feb. 2 in Boston.
