Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brandon Sans

Seahawks Complete Sweep Of Cougars

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW used a 17-4 run over a seven-minute stretch early in the second half to sweep the regular season men's basketball series against Charleston with a 68-55 victory in Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday night in Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks moved to 9-20 and 4-11 in CAA play after snapping a two-game skid. The Cougars dropped their fourth straight game and slipped to 15-13 and 9-7 in the conference.

"I'm just so proud of the guys," said interim head coach Rob Burke. "I liked their toughness, their togetherness and ability to share the basketball. We made shots early and got off to a good start. We did a great job of disguising what we wanted to do go and mixing it up on their and keeping them off balance."

Redshirt sophomore Marten Linssen notched his second career double-double with 16 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. The Dusseldorf, Germany, native was joined in double figures by junior guards Mike Okauru (17) and Ty Gadsden (13), along with freshman guard Shykeim Phillips (10).

The Cougars were paced by senior guard Grant Riller's 19 points on 5-for-11 shooting, including a game-high nine free throws. The All-CAA guard has averaged 18.7 points in nine career games against UNCW.

Charleston struggled offensively, shooting 35.6 percent on the night and just 1-of-21 from long distance. UNCW shot 46.6 percent and outscored the Cougars, 21-3, from deep.

After taking a slim 34-32 lead into halftime, the Seahawks reeled off nine consecutive points over a two-minute stretch early in the second half that was punctuated by Phillips' first career slam dunk and a 47-35 advantage at the 15:31 mark.

An Okauru three-pointer gave the Seahawks their largest lead, 55-39, with 10:37 remaining in the second half. Charleston used a 12-5 spurt to trim the lead to single digits, 60-51, with a pair of free throws by senior forward Sam Miller with 4:23 left in the game.

The nine-point deficit was the closest the Cougars could come. Charleston missed seven of its final eight shots as the Seahawks completed their only conference sweep of the season

The Seahawks opened the game hitting six of their first eight shots and took a 14-8 lead with a slam dunk by freshman forward Imajae Dodd at the 14:34 mark. The Cougars answered with an 11-0 run by converting 7-of-8 field goals, including their lone three of the game by sophomore guard Jaylen Richard, to take a 19-14 lead with 11:44 left in the first half.

A slam dunk by Riller made it a 28-24 ballgame at 5:21 before Linssen battled for a layup that sparked an 8-0 run that gave UNCW a 32-28 lead with 3:09 in the half. Linssen pulled down his 10th board with 38 seconds in the first half to notch the double-double.

The Seahawks look ahead to the final weekend of the regular season with games at home against Drexel (Feb. 27) and Delaware (Feb. 29).
