Campbell Pulls Away for 70-57 Win

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Led by redshirt senior forward Taya Bolden, Campbell used a strong second-half performance to pull away from UNCW for a 70-57 non-conference victory inside Trask Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

The win evened the Camels' record to 1-1 while UNCW dropped to 1-1 on the early season.

Bolden, who finished with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, tallied 17 of those points after the intermission as Campbell shot 66.7 percent (16-for-24) from the field in the game's final 20 minutes to secure the victory.

Junior guards Shy Tuelle and Luana Serranho also posted double-digit scoring efforts for Campbell in the victory. Tuelle, a product of Hampton, Tenn., finished with 18 points after going 7-for-14 from the field, including a 4-of-9 showing from three-point range. She also finished with seven rebounds and three assists.

Serranho, meanwhile, chipped in 17 points by making 7-of-11 shots from the floor while contributing three assists in 28 minutes.

The Seahawks, who finished a quick two-game homestand to open the season, were led by freshman guard Mary McMillan's 11 points and five assists while senior forward Carol-Anne Obusek and junior guard Camille Downs each tallied 10 points. Obusek also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Key Moment: Trailing by a 30-26 margin with 2:15 left in the second quarter, the Camels scored 14 consecutive points over an eight-minute span to claim a 40-30 lead they did not relinquish. Bolden led the outburst by netting six points.

Game Notes:
  • Saturday's game marked the first meeting between the Seahawks and the Camels since the 2014-15 season … Campbell now holds a 32-17 series advantage over its in-state rivals.
  • Each team grabbed 35 rebounds in the contest … However, the Seahawks held a commanding 17-9 edge in offensive rebounds, which they used to score 20 second-chance points.
  • Obusek reached double figures in scoring for the 10th time in her career.
  • Junior guard Za'Nautica Downs recorded a game-high seven steals on Saturday, marking the most thefts by a UNCW player since Moriah Crisp had seven steals against Charleston in the first round of last year's Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship.
  • After making 6-of-12 three-point attempts in the first half on Saturday, UNCW was just 2-for-10 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes … In two games this season, the Seahawks are now 14-for-41 from distance.
Up Next: UNCW takes a break to complete its fall semester final exams before hitting the road for the first time this season on Monday, Dec. 7, with a non-conference contest at South Carolina State.
