Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Seahawks Storm Past Bulldogs In MTE

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina – The day after Thanksgiving, 2020, will be one Takayo Siddle won't soon forget.

Two days after dropping his head coaching debut to Western Carolina, Siddle steered the UNCW men's basketball team to an impressive 76-68 come-from-behind victory on the opening day of the Mako Medical Asheville Classic at UNCA's Kimmel Arena.

The Seahawks, 1-1, conclude their season-opening road trip to the North Carolina mountains on Saturday with a 1 p.m. pairing against Sun Belt Conference foe Troy. The Trojans rallied to defeat Western Carolina, 66-64, in their season opener on Friday at Kimmel Arena.

UNCW staged a rally of its own in Friday's second game, rallying from 10 points down with 9:08 left to play to stun the Bulldogs. The Seahawks converted 10-of-12 free throws in the final nine minutes to nail down the win over the team picked to finish second in the Big South Conference.

Junior guard Jaylen Sims paced the Seahawks for the second straight game with 24 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Sophomore guard Jake Boggs added 19 points, senior guard Mike Okauru chipped in 14 and senior guard Ty Gadsden wound up with 12.

The Bulldogs placed five men in double figures, topped by sophomore guard Trent Stephney's 14 points. Graduate forward Evan Clayborne and junior guard Tajion Jones scored 12 points apiece and junior guard LJ Thorpe finished with 10.

"It's tough to get wins…we earned that one," said Siddle. "They all fought. That was a great team win. I challenged these guys and my message was to be the tougher team. Tonight, we were the tougher team.

"We knew we could get to the paint. We just needed to focus and finish and we did. I'm proud of our guys for executing the game plan."

The Bulldogs grabbed a 35-31 edge at the break and appeared to have the game in hand midway through the final period when Clayborne's dunk extended the Bulldogs' advantage to 10 points, 58-48.

That caused Siddle to step in.

"I gave them some tough love," Siddle recalled. "I got on them. I reminded them that we can't revert back. We got over the hump and we were able to come back, close the gap and win the game."

The Seahawks chipped away at the UNCA lead and finally caught up with 3:30 remaining on a Boggs alley-oop slam that lifted UNCW to a 65-63 edge. After the Bulldogs knotted the score at 65-all on another Clayborne flush, UNCW outscored UNCA, 11-3, over the last 2:33 to secure the dramatic road win.

UNCA forged out to a 35-31 lead at intermission after shooting 53.3 percent over the first 20 minutes and draining three triples. Neither team led by more than five points in a tight first half that saw the two clubs exchange leads throughout the period.

The Seahawks went to the charity stripe often throughout the game and cashed in, converting 24-of-32 at the foul line, including 14-of-16 in the final 20 minutes.
