SAAC Conducts Beach Sweep At Wrightsville Beach

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Partnering with the Cape Fear chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, the UNCW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) continued its busy fall by conducting a Beach Sweep early Saturday at nearby Wrightsville Beach.

A group of 25 student-athletes assembled near the iconic Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier and split into two groups, one canvassing the north end of the scenic beachfront and the other heading south toward Crystal Pier.

"In accordance with SAAC's policy of promoting contribution to our community, we organized a beach cleanup hosted by the Surfrider Foundation," said JM Lewandowski, 2020-21 SAAC president. "We're all about helping out our local community and contributing to the wellbeing of our beaches, while still maintaining social distancing guidelines and wearing masks.

"The pandemic has made it hard to find community service opportunities, but SAAC is committed to seeking out ways to bolster the community through thoughtful actions. I look forward to seeing what other service events SAAC can participate in."

Former UNCW tennis standout Kevin Piacenza of the Surfrider Foundation helped organize the event.

"The Surfrider Foundation's mission blends the serious work of environmental activism with the reality that surfing is pure fun," said Piacenza. "We're dedicated to giving back to help protect the waves and beaches that have given us so much over our lifetimes. The Beach Sweep initiative strives to raise awareness of the challenges that our shorelines and sea life face in a disposable society."

The Surfrider Foundation was founded in 1984 by a group of surfers concerned with health risks associated with the coastal development of one of their favorite surf breaks in Malibu, Calif. It has grown into a network of 84 volunteer chapters across the US and eight countries. The chapters focus on various campaigns specific to their local community.
The Cape Fear Chapter, founded in in 1993, concentrates on water quality, opposition to offshore oil drilling, storm water stenciling, beach access, and beach litter.
