Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brandon Sans

Seahawks Come Up Short To Tigers

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – A pair of clutch three-pointers by guards Brian Fobbs and Allen Betrand near the three-minute mark of the second half broke open a tie game and lifted Towson past UNCW, 67-60, in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action on Saturday night at Trask Coliseum.

Towson improved to 7-9 (1-3 CAA) with its first league victory of the season. The Seahawks fell to 5-12 (0-4 CAA) after suffering their ninth consecutive loss of the campaign.

"It was a hard fought basketball game," said C.B. McGrath, UNCW's third-year head coach. "It was back and forth late in the game. We really battled on the defensive end, but just couldn't secure the rebounds that we needed.

"We forced them into some tough looks. They got some offensive rebounds and ended up scoring on some possessions to retain their lead. They are really physical attacking the offensive boards."

Fobbs and Betrand led all scorers with 16 points each on a combined 44.4 percent (12-for-27) shooting. UNCW was paced by sophomore guard Jaylen Sims' 14 points, while freshman guard Shykeim Phillips and junior guard Ty Gadsden each had 10.

The Tigers, who built a 27-21 lead at the break, increased their lead to 10 points five minutes into the final period before the Seahawks rallied.

Trailing 49-47 after a Nakye Sanders fast break layup at 5:02, the Seahawks squared the game at 49 on two free throws by Sims with 4:37 left to play.

But Fobbs drained a long trey on the right wing and Betrand added a triple in the left corner – both coming in a 38 second time frame – and Towson surged ahead, 55-49.

Gadsden came up with a steal and layup with 56 seconds on the clock to close the gap to 59-58, but Sanders answered with a layup on the other end and the Tigers converted six straight free throws on three bonus opportunities to close out the game.

After a layup by redshirt sophomore Marten Linssen gave the Seahawks an early 10-7 lead at the 12:21 mark. UNCW then missed 11 of its next 12 field goal attempts as Towson used a 14-2 run over the stretch to build a 21-12 lead with 4:37 in the first half.

UNCW next hits the road for a two-game swing to William & Mary and Elon, beginning on Thursday with a 7 p.m. tip at W&M's Kaplan Arena. The Tribe stands 11-5 overall and undefeated at 3-0 in the CAA.
