WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Redshirt sophomore
Morgan Nanni and freshman
Jordan Faveri each scored a goal to lead UNCW to its first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season, a 2-0 victory over Northeastern at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win ended the Seahawks' brief two-game losing streak while upping their record to 5-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the CAA. Northeastern, meanwhile, fell to 4-7-0 overall and 1-1-0 in league play after suffering its third loss in the last four games.
Northeastern was forced to play down one player for most of the game after redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Megan Adams was issued a red card in the sixth minute for playing the ball with her hands outside of the penalty area. Nanni took advantage of the ensuing free kick by blasting a shot from just outside the area into the net for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 UNCW lead.
The Seahawks extended their lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute. Freshman
Emily Moxley took advantage of a Northeastern turnover and found Faveri on a breakaway. Faveri dribbled into the penalty area and slipped a shot past freshman goalkeeper Angeline Friel to the far post for her second goal of the year.
Led by junior goalkeeper
Sydney Schneider, the Seahawks limited Northeastern to just eight shots en route to posting their second shutout of the season. Schneider made three saves for UNCW while collecting the fifth shutout of her college career.
