WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior forward
Phillip Goodrum scored a goal and added an assist as UNCW opened its regular season home schedule with a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Northeastern at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who played their first seven games away from home, upped their record to 4-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the CAA. Northeastern, meanwhile, fell to 5-3-1 overall with a 2-1-1 mark against league foes.
Goodrum gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead with 17:06 remaining in the first half when he took a cross-field pass from junior
Jacob Evans and drilled a 16-yard shot into the far post past sophomore goalkeeper Chandler Cree.
UNCW increased the lead to 2-0 in the 82nd minute. Goodrum slipped a pass to sophomore
Dominic Toone, who found senior
Gabriel Cabral in front of the goal. Cabral wasted little time in firing a one-timer past Cree for his third goal of the season.
The Huskies ended UNCW's shutout bid with 1:28 remaining when redshirt freshman Timothy Ennin converted a penalty kick past freshman goalkeeper
Gabriel Perrotta.
But, the Seahawks quickly answered as redshirt senior
Danny Reynolds blasted a free kick from 19 yards out to score his third goal of the year.
Perrotta made a season-high four saves for the Seahawks, who outshot Northeastern by a 16-7 margin. Cree tallied four saves in the loss for Northeastern.
