WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore Emily Gray scored the game's only goal in the 26th minute as No. 16 Virginia Tech edged UNCW, 1-0, in the final game of the Battle by the Beach at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win allowed the Hokies to win the tournament by a pair of 1-0 scores while improving to 8-0-0 on the season. UNCW, meanwhile, dropped to 4-3-0 after suffering its first home setback of the year.
Gray, who netted her second goal of the season, gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead with 19:36 remaining in the first half when she blasted a 25-yard free kick inside the right post past junior
Sydney Schneider.
The Seahawks had several chances in the second half to score the tying goal, but senior goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn secured the shutout by recording both of her saves after the intermission.
McGlynn finished the game with four saves as the Seahawks outshot Virginia Tech by an 11-9 margin. Schneider tallied four saves in the loss for UNCW.
