Diamond Hawks Headed Back To CAA Championship

HARRISONBURG, Va. – UNCW is heading back to the Colonial Athletic Association championship for a fifth straight season as the Seahawks knocked off William & Mary, 5-1, on Friday at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Seahawks improved to 31-28 with the win while the Tribe fell to 33-21.

Greg Jones and Cole Weiss paced the Seahawks, each with two hits. Both scored a run and drove on it, Weiss' coming on a homer in the sixth inning. Noah Bridges belted his third homer of the season.

UNCW starter Zarion Sharpe (3-3) earned the win with seven innings of one-run baseball. The lefthander pitched into the eighth inning for the first time this season and struck out seven over a season-best 7.1 innings. Nick Bruno notched his first career save, retiring both batters he faced with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Jack Cone had three hits for the Tribe while Zach Pearson and Hunter Smith each had two hits.

Reliever Jacob Haney (3-4) took the loss in relief for the Tribe.

Up next: The Seahawks play the winner of Saturday's Elon and William & Mary game, which starts at noon. The championship game is set for 4 p.m., with UNCW needing one win to win the title.

How it happened: Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, UNCW used a pair of home runs to take a 3-1 lead. With one out, Weiss launched a solo shot, his fourth of the season, to tie the game. Kep Brown drew a walk off Haney and Bridges followed with a homer to deep right to make it 3-1.

Notes: UNCW had dropped all three games to the Tribe earlier this season … Sharpe has struck out 25 batters over his last 19 innings and allowed just one run over that span … Weiss has reached base in 22 consecutive games.
