Pirates Roll Past Diamondhawks, 9-1


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Turner Brown and Thomas Francisco both had two hits as eighth-ranked East Carolina rolled past UNCW, 8-1, in college baseball action on Tuesday at Brooks Field.

The Pirates ran their record to 25-7 with the road win while the Seahawks dropped to 17-16.

ECU starter Trey Benton (3-0) earned the win, striking out six and allowing one run over 2.2 innings in a predetermined start.

Gage Herring (0-4) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, over 1.2 innings.

Noah Bridges singled, stole two bases and scored UNCW's lone run of the night.

Up next: The Seahawks visit Campbell on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start.

How it happened: The Pirates jumped to an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first and added two more in the second for a 3-0 lead. A passed ball led to the first run and in the second, an RBI single by Francisco scored the first run and a safety squeeze from Brady Lloyd made it 3-0.

Notes: The Seahawks used 10 pitchers while the teams combined to use 16 … UNCW tied a season-high, striking out 14 times … Justin Walke tossed 2.1 innings of one-hit, shutout baseball and struck out two … Kep Brown pushed his hitting streak to 16 games with a second inning single.
