Gesell Tosses Gem In Series Opening Win

KENNESAW, Ga. – Luke Gesell allowed two runs on two hits over 7.2 innings to help UNCW past Kennesaw State 5-2 in the opener of a non-conference series on Friday at Stillwell Stadium.

The win halts UNCW's losing skid at four as the Seahawks improved to 16-14. The Owls, meanwhile, saw their losing streak pushed to six while falling to 15-16.

Gesell (3-2) hit the first batter of the game and surrendered a two-run homer to put UNCW an early hole. The righthander proceeded to allow just three base runners over the next 7.2 innings.

Jackson Meadows doubled twice and scored a run while six different Seahawks had a hit. Brooks Baldwin hit his fourth homer of the season to narrow UNCW's deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second.

Jake Franklin drove in both KSU runs with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, his fifth of the season.

Brooks Buckler (2-2) took the loss for the Owls, allowing five runs, four earned, over six innings. He struck out seven.

Blake Morgan struck out two of the three batters he faced for his second save.

Up next: The series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. start at Stillwell Stadium.

How it happened: UNCW scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-2 lead. Kep Brown and Lucas Oxendine drove in runs in the fourth with a single and double, respectively. In the fifth it was Cole Weiss with a single and Greg Jones with a sac fly to make it 5-2.

Notes: Gesell went a career-long 7.2 innings, the longest of any UNCW starter this season … He also allowed his first home run of the season and just the third allowed by a Seahawk starter … Brown pushed his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single in the fourth inning.
