Diamond Hawks Clinch Series With Rout


CHARLESTON, S.C. – Noah Bridges and Cole Weiss had three hits apiece as UNCW routed the College of Charleston, 14-4, in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action on Saturday at Patriots Point.

The Seahawks clinched a series win and improved to 23-22 overall and 7-7 in the conference. CofC, meanwhile, fell to 27-16 and 9-5.

Bridges tied his career high with five runs batted in while Weiss scored three runs. The Seahawks tied their season-high of 14 hits. Riley Zayicek homered for the third consecutive game and drove in two runs. Jackson Meadows added two hits, scored twice and stole his 14th base of the season.

Zarion Sharpe (1-2) earned the win with 5.1 strong innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out four.

Harrison Hawkins finished with three hits for the Cougars while Chaz Davey and Bradley Dixon had two hits apiece. Davey and Danny Wondrack both homered.

Brooks Lucas (4-2) took the loss, striking out six over 6.1 innings.

Up next: The series concludes with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.

How it happened: UNCW held a 5-2 lead going into the top of the eighth and broke it open with nine runs as 14 hitters made their way to the plate. Pinch hitter Chris Thorburn ignited the outburst with an RBI single. A run came across on a double play and the Seahawks proceeded to score seven more runs with two out. Zayicek closed out the inning with a two-run blast to right, his sixth of the season.

Notes: Kep Brown reached base for the 28th consecutive game with a double and a walk … Greg Jones stole two bases giving him 29 on the season … With three hits, Weiss now has 19 multi-hit games … With two wins thus far, the Seahawks knotted the all-time series at 15-all … UNCW totaled 10 two-out RBI's.
