Seahawks Spoil Hofstra's Senior Day

HEMPSTEAD, New York – Senior center Chinyere Bell led three UNCW players in double figures with 16 points while grabbing 11 rebounds as UNCW rallied from a six-point second half deficit to spoil Hofstra's Senior Day with a 61-51 victory over the Pride in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action at the Mack Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Seahawks elevated their record to 17-11 overall and 10-7 in the CAA while Hofstra dipped to 9-19 overall and 3-13 in the circuit.
 
Bell, the CAA leader in field goal percentage, converted 6-of-7 shots from the floor and all four of her free throws while posting her second double-double of the season.
 
Redshirt junior guard GiGi Smith added 14 points with five rebounds while junior guard Ahyiona Vason chipped in 13 points, including a 7-for-10 showing at the free throw line, with three rebounds and three assists.
 
Senior guards Sica Cuzic and Boogie Brozoski combined to score 23 points in their final home game for the Pride. Brozoski paced the team with 12 points while Cuzic added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 from the free throw line.
 
Key Moment: Trailing by a 32-26 margin midway through the third quarter, UNCW scored 16 of the next 18 points to claim a 42-34 lead with 8:47 remaining in the fourth quarter. Smith netted five of her 14 points during the spurt while Bell added four points. The Pride trimmed the margin to 43-40 with 7:32 left in the game before UNCW scored 10 straight points to secure the victory.   
 
Up Next: UNCW puts the finishing touches on its regular season schedule on Friday, Mar. 8, when the Seahawks head south for a 6:30 p.m. CAA contest against Charleston.
