Weiss Delivers Twice In Seahawk Sweep

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Cole Weiss delivered the game-winning hit in each game as UNCW swept Valparaiso, 10-8 and 4-3, on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The sweep raised UNCW's record to 6-5 while the Crusaders fell to 1-6 with their fifth straight loss.

Weiss finished with four hits and drove in five runs on the day.

Reliever Blake Morgan (2-0) earned the win in the opener with 2.2 innings of one-hit shutout baseball. In the nightcap, red-shirt freshman Brody Lawson (1-0) earned his first career win, in relief, allowing one hit and a pair of unearned runs over a career-long five innings in game two. Sophomore Landen Roupp earned the save in the second game.

Greg Jones had two hits and scored three runs in game one while Doug Angeli had three hits and drove in two runs on the day.

VU's Chase Dawson collected four hits in the opener while Brent Jones had two hits in each game and drove in four runs, including three in the opener.

Keegan Bates (0-1) and Jarrett Hammel (0-2) were saddled with the losses in games one and two, respectively.

Valpo game two starter Jon Tieman didn't figure in the decision but struck out eight and allowed three runs over six innings.

UP NEXT: The Seahawks and Crusaders close out the series on Sunday with a noon start, which was moved up from 2 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1: After Valpo struck for four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at eight-all, Weiss lined a single into left to score the go-ahead runs with one out.
Game 2: Jackson Meadows, who homered in the first game, doubled in Matt Suggs and sent Jones around to third. Weiss plated both runners one batter later with a single into center field for a 4-3 lead.

NOTES: Junior Riley Zayicek and red-shirt junior Kep Brown both homered in the first game, for Zayicek it was his second of the week … UNCW swiped four bases on the afternoon with sophomore Noah Bridges taking two … 5-of-6 wins this season have been credited to the bullpen … Jones has now reached base safely in 22 straight game, dating back to last season … Angeli, meanwhile, has reached safely in 10 consecutive games.
