Seahawks Split Pair in Home Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshmen Camryn Dean and Janel Gamache each registered two hits as UNCW opened the home portion of its 2019 schedule by splitting a pair of games at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Seahawk Softball Bash at Boseman Field on Friday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who were making their home debut, claimed a 10-3 victory over Howard in their tournament opener before falling by a 5-2 count to Radford, dropping their record to 3-4 on the young season.

Dean went 2-for-4 in the doubleheader, including a double, and scored three runs while Gamache added a 2-for-6 effort with a run scored and three runs batted in. Junior Meghan Whitecavage went 1-for-2 in the victory over Howard and drove in a pair of runs.

Senior Laurel Koontz earned the win in the circle against Howard, scattering five hits over 4.0 innings of relief while not allowing a run. She also recorded four strikeouts while issuing one walk.

How It Happened vs. Howard: UNCW broke a 3-all tie by scoring four times in the bottom of the third inning for a 7-3 advantage the Seahawks did not relinquish. The Seahawks scored twice in the third inning when a fly ball hit by freshman Jada Santiago was dropped before freshman Janel Gamache drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle later in the frame.

How It Happened vs. Radford: The Highlanders, making their season debut, scored twice in the second inning and added a run in the fifth to build a 3-0 edge they did not relinquish. UNCW trimmed the deficit to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly by redshirt junior Rachel Willis in the bottom of the fifth, but the Seahawks were unable to get any closer.

Up Next: UNCW continues play at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Seahawk Softball Bash on Saturday, Feb. 16, by hosting Howard at 10 a.m. before a 12:30 p.m. contest against Rhode Island.
