WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshmen
Camryn Dean and
Janel Gamache each registered two hits as UNCW opened the home portion of its 2019 schedule by splitting a pair of games at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Seahawk Softball Bash at Boseman Field on Friday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who were making their home debut, claimed a 10-3 victory over Howard in their tournament opener before falling by a 5-2 count to Radford, dropping their record to 3-4 on the young season.
Dean went 2-for-4 in the doubleheader, including a double, and scored three runs while Gamache added a 2-for-6 effort with a run scored and three runs batted in. Junior
Meghan Whitecavage went 1-for-2 in the victory over Howard and drove in a pair of runs.
Senior
Laurel Koontz earned the win in the circle against Howard, scattering five hits over 4.0 innings of relief while not allowing a run. She also recorded four strikeouts while issuing one walk.

Janel Gamache drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle later in the frame.
How It Happened vs. Radford: The Highlanders, making their season debut, scored twice in the second inning and added a run in the fifth to build a 3-0 edge they did not relinquish. UNCW trimmed the deficit to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly by redshirt junior
Rachel Willis in the bottom of the fifth, but the Seahawks were unable to get any closer.
