Blue Hens Spoil CAA Debut For Seahawks

NEWARK, Del. – Streaking Delaware shot 52.3 percent from the field and buried 12 three-pointers to trim UNCW, 82-68, in the Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball opener for both teams on Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens, featuring the most wins in the 10-team league, improved to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the CAA with their fifth consecutive victory over the Seahawks. The Seahawks lost their sixth in a row and dipped to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in the circuit.

"It wasn't the result we wanted," said UNCW Head Coach C.B. McGrath. "We wanted to get off to a 1-0 start in the conference. Delaware's been playing very well and got off to hot start. They have some guys who can really shoot the ball. We couldn't get the contested shots that we needed to in order to slow them down."

Junior guard Nate Darling pumped in 21 points to anchor five players in double figures for the Blue Hens, who converted 12-of-23 from long distance. Sophomore forward Justyn Mutts added 17 points, junior guard Kevin Anderson chipped in 11 points, and junior guard Ryan Allen and junior forward Dylan Painter finished with 10 apiece.

Sophomore forward Marten Linssen led the Seahawks in scoring for the fourth time this season with 15 points. Sophomore guard Brian Tolefree scored 12 points and freshman point guard Shykeim Phillips contributed 10.

Jaylen Sims, UNCW's leading scorer at 14.8 points per game, was held scoreless in the first half and wound up with nine points on 3-for-11 shooting.

The Seahawks, suiting up just nine players due to injuries and roster subtractions, hung with the Blue Hens early before UD dialed long distance to gain some breathing room midway through the first half en route to a 43-29 halftime advantage.

In the second half, the Blue Hens carved out a 27-point cushion before the Seahawks chopped the deficit to 12 points with just under three minutes left. Delaware closed out the contest behind Darling and Mutts, who combined for 12-of-23 shooting and 9-of-10 at the free throw line. Mutts scored 13 of his 17 points in the final period.

After the UD lead swelled to 65-38 on Anderson's trey at the 12:13 mark, the Seahawks staged a 14-2 rally to narrow the deficit to 71-58 and a three-pointer by Sims brought UNCW within, 76-64, at 2:57 before the Blue Hens nailed down the decision.

The Seahawks jumped out front early, 14-11, when Linssen, one of the top free throw shooters in the CAA, connected on a pair of charity tosses with just over 13 minutes remaining the first half.

But the Blue Hens, keyed by Darling, used an 18-4 spurt to create separation. An Allen three-pointer at the 4:55 mark gave the Blue Hens a 29-18 advantage and the junior guard connected on another trey with 22 seconds left in the period to give UD its largest lead of the half, 43-27. Allen needed seven points to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in his career and finished with eight in the opening period.

The Seahawks complete their CAA-opening swing on Monday, Dec. 30, with a 7 p.m. matchup against Drexel at the Daskalakis Center in West Philadelphia.
