Winthrop Surges Over Seahawks, 75-63

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore guard Destinee Jamison-Whitfield led three Winthrop players in double figures with a career-high 17 points as the Eagles snapped a five-game losing streak with a 75-63 victory over UNCW in non-conference women's basketball action inside a sold-out Trask Coliseum on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles, who were making their first visit to Wilmington since Dec. 8, 1998, upped their record to 2-6 on the season. UNCW, meanwhile, saw its record move to 3-6 after losing for the third time in the last four games.

Jamison-Whitfield, who authored her second double-digit scoring effort of the season, knocked down six of seven field goal attempts, including all three of her three-point tries, while going 2-for-5 from the free throw line.

Junior guard Anika Riley chipped in 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field while sophomore guard Jah'Che Whitfield completed the trio with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Seahawks, who were playing their first home game after fall semester final exams, were led by senior guard Lacey Suggs' 17 points. The White Lake, N.C., product went 7-for-14 from the field and sank three of her five free throws.

Redshirt senior guard GiGi Smith added 11 points with five rebounds.

Key Moment: After UNCW claimed a 36-35 advantage on a lay-up by senior Moriah Crisp with 6:46 left in the third quarter, Winthrop responded by going on a 16-1 run over the next five minutes for a 51-37 lead the Eagles did not relinquish. Sophomore Sydney Buckley used a trio of three-pointers to ignite the spurt.

Game Notes:
  • Winthrop and UNCW met for the fourth time in a series the Eagles lead by a 3-1 margin … It was the first pairing between the teams since Nov. 19, 1999, when the Seahawks posted a 76-45 road win.
  • The game was played in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,100 fans, which included nearly 5,000 elementary school students from the Wilmington area … It is the fourth-highest single-game attendance for women's basketball in Trask Coliseum history.
  • UNCW now stands 10-6 all-time in "Seahawks Tomorrow" games.
  • Smith reached double figures in scoring for the ninth consecutive game and the 37th time in 39 contests at UNCW … She also upped her career scoring total to 986 points, including 608 points as a Seahawk.
  • Sophomore guard Zhaneia Thybulle set career highs for points (8), steals (3) and minutes played (13) against Winthrop … The Elmont, N.Y. went 2-for-3 from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line.
  • Suggs authored her 40th career double-digit scoring performance with her team-high 17 points … She also led the Seahawks in scoring for the second time this season.
  • UNCW outrebounded Winthrop by a 34-33 margin, marking the second time this year the Seahawks have held the advantage on the glass.
  • The Seahawks set season highs for free throws made (19) and free throw attempts (27).
