Seahawks Topple Elon on Goodrum's Golden Goal

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior forward Phillip Goodrum scored the game's only goal in the second overtime period as UNCW extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-0 victory over Elon in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.

The Seahawks, who earned the CAA outright regular season title with the victory, upped their record to 11-4-2 overall and 7-0-1 in league play. Elon, meanwhile, dropped to 6-9-1 overall and 1-6-0 in the CAA.

After Elon was whistled for a handball inside the penalty area, Goodrum stepped up to the penalty spot with 4:14 remaining in the second overtime period and drilled a shot into the lower left side of the goal to give UNCW the victory. It was Goodrum's 10th goal of the season, including his fifth marker in the last three games.

Freshman goalkeeper Gabriel Perrotta made three saves to record his eighth shutout of the season as the Seahawks outshot Elon, 16-5. Peter Wentzel registered four saves for Elon, which was eliminated from CAA Tournament consideration with the loss.

  • UNCW has now won 11 games in four of the last six years, including the last three years in a row.

  • Goodrum is the first UNCW player to convert a penalty kick since David Lozano against William & Mary on Oct. 27, 2018.
  • Goodrum scored the 31st goal of his college career, including his fourth marker against Elon … It was the first penalty kick goal of his career.
  • Goodrum becomes the fourth player in UNCW men's soccer history to record back-to-back 10-goal campaigns … He has netted 22 of his 31 career markers since the start of last season.
