Seahawks Fall To Wildcats In Road Opener

DAVIDSON, North Carolina – Sophomore forward Luka Brajkovic scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the first half to help Davidson win its sixth straight over UNCW, 87-49, in men's basketball non-conference action on Saturday at Belk Arena.

The Wildcats, 1-2, improved to 27-4 in home openers under 31-year head coach Bob McKillop. The Seahawks, playing their first road game of the new season, had their record squared at 2-2.

The rangy Brajkovic converted 10-of-14 shots to anchor five Davidson players in double figures. Kellan Grady added 14 points, Carter Collins chipped in 12, Jon Axel Gudmundsson collected 12 and Hyunjung Lee had 11 for the Wildcats.

Sophomore guard Jaylen Sims paced the Seahawks with 14 points, including 11 in the opening frame. He was the lone Seahawk in double digits.

"They got going tonight and we didn't have the kind of performance we wanted, especially in the second half," said third-year UNCW Head Coach C.B. McGrath. "We scored the first basket of the second half to cut it to single digits and it snowballed on us. They scored like crazy from the three-point line in the second half."

The Wildcats, picked to finish second in the Atlantic-10 Conference and receiving votes in the top-25 poll, jumped out early on the Seahawks and never let up, shooting 55.0 percent on the night and raining 13-of-26 from three-point range.

Davidson built a 41-30 lead at halftime behind Brajkovic, who netted 17 of his total in the opening 20 minutes. The 6-10, 250-pound sophomore from Feldkirch, Austria, scored Davidson's first two buckets of the game and went 8-of-11 in the first period as the Wildcats built a working margin.

The Wildcats led by as many as 19 points in the first period before the Seahawks, behind Sims and Phillips, cut into the deficit. Sims scored 11 points and Phillips added eight to keep the Seahawks within striking distance at the break.

Sophomore forward Marten Linssen scored the first bucket of the second as the Seahawks climbed within 41-32, but Davidson reeled off 15 unanswered points to extend the margin to 56-32 behind Brajkovic and Gudmunsson.

UNCW wound up shooting 37.3 percent from the floor on 19-of-51 field goal attempts and was outrebounded, 39-24, on the boards.

The Seahawks return to the floor on Tuesday when they entertain N.C. Wesleyan in a 7 p.m. tip at Trask Coliseum.
