No. 14 NC State Defeats Seahawks

RALEIGH, North Carolina – No. 14 NC State used a 14-1 run over the final four minutes of the first half to break away from UNCW en route to an 80-40 victory over the Seahawks in non-conference women's basketball action at Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

The Wolfpack upped their record to 2-0 on the young season while UNCW dropped to 0-2.

Redshirt senior guard GiGi Smith paced the Seahawks with a team-high 17 points on 6-for-18 shooting from the field, including a 4-of-12 effort from three-point range. Smith also pulled in five rebounds while playing a game-high 38 minutes.

Senior guard Ahyiona Vason chipped in 12 points for the Seahawks, shooting an efficient 6-for-8 from the floor. Junior forward Paige Powell contributed five points with a team-high seven rebounds.

Sophomore center Elissa Cunane led three NC State players in double figures with a game-high 18 points while adding nine rebounds.

Junior forward Kayla Jones tallied 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Wolfpack while freshman guard Jakia Brown-Turner scored 11 points.

Key Moment: Led by back-to-back three-pointers from Brown-Turner, NC State used a 10-0 run over a two-minute span in the opening quarter to build a 12-5 advantage the Wolfpack never relinquished.

Game Notes:

  • NC State improved to 6-0 all-time against the Seahawks … It was the first meeting between the two teams since 2016.
  • The Seahawks have opened the season with back-to-back losses for the first time since beginning the 2013-14 campaign with setbacks against Notre Dame and Elon.
  • NC State Head Coach Wes Moore achieved his 700th career win against the Seahawks … Moore has won 142 games as the Wolfpack bench boss.
  • Smith has now scored in double figures in 30-of-32 career appearances with the Seahawks.
  • Vason authored her sixth double-digit effort at UNCW.
  • NC State outrebounded UNCW by a 51-37 margin and fashioned a 12-2 advantage in second chance points.

Up Next: The Seahawks conclude their season-opening three-game road swing on Wednesday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Farmville, Va. for a 7 p.m. matchup at Longwood.
