HEMPSTEAD, New York – Senior defender
Mark Lindstrom scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute as UNCW rallied to defeat Hofstra with a 3-2 overtime victory in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The win upped the Seahawks' record to 5-4-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the CAA. Hofstra, meanwhile, saw its record move to 5-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the CAA after losing for the second time in the last three games.
Lindstrom, who netted his second goal of the season, gave UNCW the victory with 4:52 remaining in the first overtime period when he headed in a corner kick by redshirt senior
Danny Reynolds into the far side of the goal.
Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a goal by junior Matthew Vowinkel. Sophomore Lennart Seufert started the play when he took a pass at midfield and dribbled the ball down to the top of the penalty area before finding senior Adam Savill on the near side. Savill sent a crossing pass into the box, which was one-timed by Vowinkel for his third goal of the season.
But, the Seahawks answered just before halftime to even the score at 1-1. Sophomore
Athit Berg took a pass from senior
Jamil Gracia and sent a cross into the penalty area, which was headed into the near post by senior forward
Phillip Goodrum for his team-high fifth goal of the season.
The Pride reclaimed the one-goal advantage early in the second half when junior Storm Strongin collected a loose ball in the penalty area and knocked in his second goal of the season to the far post.
Freshman
Cannon Tootle tied the game at 2-2 with the first goal of his college career in the 79th minute. He took a pass from Goodrum on a breakaway and slipped a shot from a sharp angle past Hofstra graduate student goalkeeper Alex Ashton inside the far post.
Freshman goalkeeper
Gabriel Perrotta recorded two saves in the victory for UNCW, which outshot the Pride by a 23-7 margin. Ashton had two saves for Hofstra.
