Horton Lifts Blue Hens Past Seahawks

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior forward Devontae Cacok tied the career rebounding record at UNCW, but rookie guard Ithiel Horton matched Delaware's freshman scoring mark with 31 points in an 82-69 victory over the Seahawks in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Thursday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Blue Hens won their fourth straight contest and pushed their record to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in the CAA. UNCW now stands 6-11 and 2-2.

Cacok, who notched his CAA-leading 11th double-double of the season and 46th of his career behind 12 points and 12 rebounds, raised his career rebound total to 1,055 boards, tying Keith Rendleman (2009-13) on the school's rebounding list.

Sophomore guard Jay Estime' led the Seahawks in scoring for the second straight game with 15 points, while redshirt junior guard Jeantal Cylla had 13, Cacok finished with 12 and sophomore guard Ty Gadsden collected 11.

Horton, the CAA's freshman scoring leader, went 10-of-15 from the floor and 9-of-13 from long range in tying UD's freshman scoring mark. He also set a school record with his nine triples on the night.

Senior forward Eric Carter posted a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds – his fourth straight double-double and 10th on the season – and sophomore guard Ryan Allen chipped in 10 points for UD.

The Blue Hens started strong behind Horton, who poured in 20 points in the opening period on 6-of-8 shooting. Delaware led by as many as 13 points in the first frame before settling for a 41-31 cushion at the break.

The Seahawks got no closer than 10 points down the stretch as the Blue Hens stayed hot, shooting 52.2 percent from the floor in the final period en route to 51.9 percent on the night. Delaware also sizzled at the free throw line, converting 13-of-14 free throws.

Horton opened the scoring in the game with back-to-back triples and made his first four treys to stake the Blue Hens to an early 12-6 advantage with just over 15 minutes left in the first half. Delaware registered its largest lead of the period, 41-28, when Horton sank a trifecta on the left wing with 43 seconds left in the first half.

In the second period, Matt Veretto drilled a three-pointer to raise Delaware's lead to 44-31 on UD's first possession of the half before Estime' answered with a trey at the 18:45 mark to get the lead down to 10 points, 44-34.

It was the closest the Seahawks would come as the Blue Hens cruised behind Horton and Carter in the second half. Delaware's largest lead of the contest came with 17:20 remaining when Allen sank a pair of free throws and the margin swelled to 51-34.

SERIES UPDATE: The Blue Hens have taken three in a row from the Seahawks to narrow UNCW's advantage in the series to 22-14.

UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN: UNCW and UD play again in 30 days when the two rival collide at the Bob Carpenter Center on Feb. 9, 2019, in Newark, Del.

QUOTABLE: "Our guys looked a little shell shocked when they made some of those deep three's early. We just never recovered. We couldn't get anything going offensively and couldn't find our rhythm. We just were a step slow. We looked like we were in quicksand a lot of times. We just didn't have the movement we've had." – UNCW Head Coach C.B. McGrath

NEXT UP: UNCW continues its two-game conference home stand on Saturday when Drexel pays a visit to Trask Coliseum for a 2 p.m. tip.
