NCAA Regional Run Ends With 8-4 Loss

UNCW saw its season come to an end with a loss to South Carolina


GREENVILLE, N.C. – Carlos Cortes had four hits as South Carolina, the second seed in the NCAA Greenville Regional, advanced to the Super Regional round next weekend with an 8-4 win over UNCW on Monday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The Gamecocks raised their record to 36-24 while the Seahawks end their season with a mark of 39-23.

Cortes led a 15-hit Gamecock offense which saw four other players have multi-hit games. Madison Stokes had two hits and drove in three runs. Jonah Bride also added two hits, including his fourth homer of the season.

Carmen Mlodzinski (3-5) earned the win going five innings for the Gamecocks.

Mason Berne paced UNCW with three hits and he knocked in two runs. Kep Brown finished with two hits and drove in two runs with his seventh homer of the season and the second of the regional.

Starter Alex Royalty took the loss to finish the season with a 6-6 record.

How it happened: South Carolina broke through in the third inning with two runs, both coming on a two-run single up the middle by Hunter Taylor. Leading 2-1, USC scored two in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead.

Notes: Greg Jones tied UNCW's single-season hit by pitch record with 19 … UNCW reached the NCAA Regionals for the ninth time and we eliminated by the Gamecocks for a second time … Brown hit .476 (10-21) for the regional with five runs scored and seven knocked in … Mason Berne batted .444, going 8-for-18) … The Seahawks led the regional with a .321 batting average.
