Emily Langkamp had three hits and sophomore
Dominique Travers belted a three-run home run, but fourth-seeded UNCW was unable to complete the comeback as the Seahawks dropped an 8-6 decision against the College of the Charleston in the opening game of the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Championship at Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars, who snapped a nine-game losing streak in their series against UNCW, upped their record to 30-25 while the Seahawks fell to 19-28.
Langkamp, a CAA All-Rookie Team selection, went 3-for-4 and scored a run to lead the Seahawks' nine-hit attack. Travers, meanwhile, slugged her team-leading seventh home run of the year in the third inning with a three-run shot before adding another run batted in with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning.
Junior
Haley Lenderman took the loss for the Seahawks, allowing six runs, including four unearned runs, on four hits over 3.0 innings. Senior
Sarah Davis scattered three hits over the final 4.0 innings in relief.
Charleston was led by junior Madi Brown's 2-for-3 effort while five other players each contributed a hit.
How It Happened: Charleston surged to a 7-3 lead by scoring at least once in four of its first five trips to the plate, including a three-run effort in the fourth inning. UNCW trimmed the deficit to 7-6 by scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth before the Cougars added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.
Inside the Box Score: Charleston and UNCW were a combined 5-for-20 with runners in scoring position … The Cougars were 13-of-24 in advancement opportunities while the Seahawks were 8-for-15 in those situations … Charleston had its leadoff runner reach base in 5-of-7 innings.
Notes: UNCW dropped to 3-7 all-time in the CAA Championship … Langkamp posted her first career three-hit game … Travers extended her hitting streak to seven consecutive games and set a career high with four runs batted in … The Seahawks' top four hitters in the lineup combined to record seven of the team's nine hits in the game … UNCW lost for the first time this year when scoring six or more runs.
