Weiss Strikes In The Ninth!!

Sophomore third baseman doubles in winning run in the bottom of the ninth

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Cole Weiss doubled off the wall in right to score Greg Jones from first base in the bottom of the ninth and lifted UNCW to a 2-1 win over Delaware in the opening game of the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament on Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Park.

The win, UNCW's NCAA-leading seventh walk-off of the season, moved UNCW's record to 34-20 while the Blue Hens dipped to 29-26 with the loss.

UNCW reliever Austin Warren (8-0) picked up the win after striking out all four Blue Hens he faced.

UD starter Kyle Hinton (6-7) suffered the loss, allowing both runs in 8 1/3 innings. He struck out 10, walked two and allowed six hits.

Weiss finished with three hits on the game and drove in both runs. He knotted the game at 1-all in the seventh with a RBI single that plated Kep Brown, who open the inning with a double.

Nick Patten had two hits for the Blue Hens, including his ninth homer of the season.

Up next: The Seahawks return to play on Thursday when they face regular season champion Northeastern at 11 a.m.

How it happened: Greg Jones drew a walk to open the ninth and after UD registered an out, reliever James Meeker took over for Hinton. Weiss lined a 1-1 offering off the wall in right and Jones came around to score as the ball carried past the UD outfielder.

Notes: Gage Herring went a career-long 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and a run while striking out a career-high six … Mason Berne extended his consecutive game on base streak to 48 with a fourth inning single … The Seahawks have won 12 games in the final at-bat, including seven of the "walk-off" variety … The UNCW bullpen earned its 25th win of the season and UNCW owns a record of 14-3 in one-run games.
