Meadows Sends UNCW Home Winners

Jackson Meadows' RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave UNCW a 4-3 win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jackson Meadows' single up the middle scored Brycen Braswell from second base in the bottom of the ninth to lift UNCW to a 4-3 win over Wofford in the series finale on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (20-11) halted a three-game losing skid while the Terriers, who won the first two games of the weekend on Friday, dropped to 22-11. For UNCW, it was its seventh one-run win of the season.

Reliever Clark Cota (3-0) earned the victory for the Seahawks, striking out the side in the top of the ninth inning. Wofford reliever Jake Hershman (0-3) suffered the loss, retiring one of the two batters he faced in the ninth.

Noah Liles held team-high honors with two hits for UNCW, which trailed 3-0 after 5 1/2 innings.

Ryan Jeffers homered in the bottom of the sixth with a man on. It was his team-leading ninth round tripper of the season. Mason Berne added a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

McClain Bradley and Mack Nathanson each collected a pair of hits for the Terriers. Colin Davis hit his sixth homer of the season with a man on in the fifth to stake Wofford to a 3-0 lead.

Up next: The Seahawks host nationally-ranked NC State on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start at Brooks Field.

How it happened: UNCW trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth when with two out, Zack Canada singled and Jeffers launched a two-run shot to left to make it 3-2. With two outs in the Seahawk eighth, Berne punched a single into right to score Greg Jones from third to tie the game. Jones had singled and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw. In the ninth, Braswell drew a walk and moved up to second on Liles successful sacrifice bunt. Meadows followed with a single up the middle to score the game-winning run.

Inside the box score: UNCW had five of its eight hits on the day with two out, Wofford was 0-9 … Both teams struggled to get their leadoff hitter on base (UNCW 2-9, Wofford 1-9) … UNCW had three runs batted in with two out.

Notes: Berne's hitting streak is now up to 12 games and his consecutive games on base is at 25 … The Seahawks bullpen of Austin Easter, Austin Warren and Cota allowed just a hit and a walk over the final 4 2/3 innings … UNCW is 7-1 in one-run games and 11-3 in games decided by two runs or less … UNCW had seven freshmen or sophomore in the starting lineup … UNCW's bullpen has a 15-2 record.
