Elon Nips Seahawks in Series Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Seniors Kara Shutt and Hannah Olson combined for five hits and two runs scored as Elon outlasted UNCW, 3-2, in Colonial Athletic Association softball action at Boseman Field on Friday evening.
 
The Phoenix, which ended a four-game losing streak, upped its record to 19-17 overall and 3-4 in the CAA. UNCW dropped to 11-20 overall with a 1-6 mark against league foes.
 
Shutt and Olson teamed up to spearhead the Phoenix's nine-hit attack by going 5-for-8 in the victory. Shutt was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Olson posted a three-hit effort with a run scored and a run batted in.
 
Redshirt sophomore Abby Barker earned the win in the circle after allowing one run on four hits over 4.1 innings. Junior Hailey Jomp secured her second save of the year after giving one unearned run in the final 2.2 innings.
 
Junior Hannah Adamczyk paced UNCW in the loss by going 2-for-4 while five other players registered a hit. Junior Haley Lenderman suffered the loss in the circle after giving up two runs on seven hits over 4.0 innings.
 
How It Happened: Elon surged to a 2-0 lead by scoring a run in the second and third innings. UNCW trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning when freshman Anna Knox hit the first home run of her career, a solo shot to left center. The teams traded a run in the sixth inning, but the Seahawks were unable to get any closer.    
 
Notes: Senior Kelsey Bryan extended her hitting streak to six consecutive games with a single in the third inning … Sophomore Dominique Travers also increased her hitting streak to five games in a row with an RBI single in the sixth inning … The teams combined to leave 11 runners on base and were 3-for-20 with runners in scoring position … UNCW tallied five of its seven hits in two-out situations.  
 
Up Next: UNCW and Elon complete the three-game CAA series on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader at Boseman Field beginning at noon. It will be the Seahawks' Alumni Day and Military Appreciation Day.
