Seahawks Fall To Phoenix, 6-2

Series set for rubber match on Sunday

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Cam Devanney had three hits and George Kirby allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings as Elon topped UNCW, 6-2, to even the Colonial Athletic Association series on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Phoenix improved to 26-17 overall and into a tie with the Seahawks for third in the conference at 8-6. UNCW saw its record fall to 26-16 and its modest three-game winning streak halted.

Devanney also added two walks and he raised his batting average to .327 on the season. Ryne Ogren, Liam O'Regan and Matt Oldham added two hits apiece for the Phoenix. O'Regan slammed his fourth home run of the season in the ninth inning to make it 6-2.

Kirby, who improved to 8-1, scattered five hits and walked three while striking out six.

Landen Roupp (0-3) took the loss, but allowed just one earned run as a first inning error led to a pair of unearned runs.

Zack Canada, Greg Jones and David Sheaffer had two hits apiece for UNCW.

Up next: The Seahawks and Phoenix play game three on Sunday as both look to earn a crucial series victory in the CAA standings. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

How it happened: Elon was able to take advantage of an error in the first inning to build a 2-0 lead. Hayden Platt got the Phoenix on the board with a sacrifice fly and James Venuto added a two-out RBI single one batter later. Elon added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 5-1 lead.

Inside the box score: Four of UNCW's hits were with two out, but it struggled with RISP, going 2-for-9 … Roupp allowed Elon's only two-out hit on the game, coming in the first inning … Luke Gesell tossed 2 2/3 innings of one-hit, shutout relief for UNCW.

Notes: Mason Berne singled in the ninth to extend his consecutive games reached safely to 36 … UNCW dipped to 19-10 at home.
