Seahawks Power Past Towson in CAA Opener

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – Redshirt senior forward Jenny DeGraaf scored 15 points and sophomore guard Lacey Suggs added 14 points as eighth-seeded UNCW advanced to the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship with a 58-47 victory over ninth-seeded Towson at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Seahawks, who earned their second win over the Tigers in seven days, upped their record to 12-18. Towson, meanwhile, has its season end with a 9-21 record after losing its seventh game in a row.
 
DeGraaf, who scored in double figures for the sixth consecutive game, converted 11-of-13 free throws in addition to a 2-for-5 effort from the field while adding a team-high eight rebounds.
 
Suggs came off the bench to add 14 points, including a 5-for-6 effort from the charity stripe, with four rebounds and three assists.
 
Senior forward Mary Cuevas paced Towson by recording a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds while junior guard Danielle Durjan came off the bench to match DeGraaf for game-high honors with 15 points.   
 
Key Moment: UNCW surged to a 22-8 lead in the game's first 12 minutes while limiting Towson to just 3-of-17 shooting from the field. Sophomore guard Timber Tate scored all eight of her points during the spurt.  
 
Up Next: UNCW advances to face top-seeded Drexel in the CAA quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. Opening tip-off from the Daskalakis Athletic Center is slated for noon.
