Diamond Hawks Take Series From Bobcats With 6-3 Win

UNCW broke a 3-all deadlock in the fourth and turned it over to the bullpen


WILMINGTON, N.C.Freshman Greg Jones had two hits and senior Zack Canada drove in three runs as UNCW knocked off Quinnipiac, 6-3, to win the weekend series on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks ran their record to 10-4 at home and 13-6 overall. Quinnipiac, which has played all 16 games on the road early this season dipped to 8-8 with the loss.

Jones, who also scored twice, extended his hitting streak to four games with a first inning single. Canada gave the Seahawks a 3-0 lead in the third inning when he launched his fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot, off losing pitcher Brandon Shileikis (2-2).

Reliever Austin Easter (3-0), a senior, earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of two-hit, shutout relief. Junior Clark Cota notched his Colonial Athletic Association leading sixth save of the season retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth.

Dylan Lutz led the Bobcats with two hits at the top of the order. Liam Scafariello doubled in two runs in a three-run fourth inning.

Up next: Freshman Landen Roupp (0-0) gets the start for UNCW on Sunday while Quinnipiac counters with Tyler Poulin (2-2). First-pitch is slated for 2 p.m.

How it happened: UNCW broke a 3-all deadlock in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded ground ball out to the rightside by Canada. The Seahawk bullpen clamped down on the Bobcats the rest of the way, allowing just three base runners over the final 4 2/3 innings.

Inside the box score: UNCW managed to gets its leadoff hitter on base just twice, but Quinnipiac struggled too, doing so three times and none after the fourth inning … Both teams combined to 1-for-16 with two outs.

Notes: UNCW has won each of its five weekend series … The UNCW bullpen has combined for a 9-0 record with seven saves …. Cota moved into a tie for fifth on UNCW's career saves list with 10, joining William Prince (2-11-14) and Jared Gesell (2013-16) … Easter made his 70th career appearance, moving into 19th on UNCW's career records list … Ryan Jeffers extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in his last at bat coming in the seventh inning … Canada also pushed his hitting streak to six games …Canada now has a 14-game on base streak while Mason Berne and Jeffers are at 13 games and Greg Jones owns a 12-game streak … The Seahawks held Military Appreciation Day and wore camouflage jerseys which were auctioned off during the game with proceeds going to Step up For Soldiers.
