Buckeyes Finish Sweep Of Seahawks

Ohio State stung the Seahawks with an 8-1 victory on Wednesday


WILMINGTON, North CarolinaMason Berne collected three hits for the second straight game, but it was Ohio State, which came away with a series sweep with an 8-1 win on Wednesday at Brooks Field.

The Buckeyes ran their record to 11-6 while the Seahawks dropped to 11-6 with their second consecutive setback.

Dominic Canzone finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. He connected on his third homer of the season in the second inning to stake OSU to a 5-0 lead.

Jake Vance (1-1) earned his first win of the season, going four innings in a predetermined start. The righthander allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out three.

UNCW starter Nick Bruno (0-1) was saddled with the loss, lasting just 1 2/3 innings.

Up next: The Seahawks continue their nine-game homestand on Friday with a 6 p.m. start against Quinnipiac.

How it happened: OSU struck for three runs in the first inning for the second straight game. Noah McGowan plated the first run with a sacrifice fly and Connor Pohl added a RBI single later in the inning.

Inside the box score: Both teams landed their leadoff hitter on base three times and both went hitless with the bases loaded … UNCW went 0-8 with RISP while OSU was 5-14.

Notes: Berne raised his average to .383 with three hits … Six UNCW relievers combined to allow three runs, one earned, over the final 7 1/3 innings … Luke Gesell retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings … Berne and Jeffers both have five-game hitting streaks … UNCW's lone run came on a double by Cole Weiss in the fourth inning.
