Diamond Hawks Upend Sixth-Ranked North Carolina

Berne collects three hits and drives in three to lead Seahawks


CHAPEL HILL, N.C.Mason Berne doubled twice and homered as UNCW overcame a 3-0 deficit in the first inning to knock off sixth-ranked North Carolina, 5-4, in college baseball action Tuesday at Boshamer Field.

The win improved UNCW's record to 3-1 while the Tar Heels dropped to 2-2.

Berne doubled in the fifth and then connected on a three-run homer in the sixth to give UNCW a 4-3 lead. In the ninth inning, he ignited the winning rally with a lead-off double.

Greg Jones, Cole Weiss and Zack Canada finished with two hits apiece. Canada plated the winning run in the ninth with a single to score Berne.

Senior reliever Austin Warren (1-0) earned the win and junior closer Clark Cota struck out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth for his second save of the season.

Joey Lancellotti (0-1) took the loss in relief for UNC.

Kyle Datres finished with a game-high three hits for the Tar Heels and Michael Busch hit his second homer of the season, a three-run shot in the first to give UNC the early lead.

Up Next: The Seahawks host Appalachian State this weekend for three games. Game one is set for Friday at 4 p.m.

How it happened: In the ninth, Berne doubled to left and moved to third on an infield hit by Cole Weiss. Canada stepped to the plate and dropped a single into the outfield behind the drawn in Tar Heel infield to score Berne and give the Seahawks the lead at 5-4.

Notes: The win snapped a 10-game losing skid for the Seahawks against nationally-ranked opponents … UNCW last win against a ranked opponent was in 2016 against UNC, 6-2, at Brooks Field … The last road win against a ranked opponent was in 2015 when the Seahawks topped 13th-ranked College of Charleston in the CAA Championship game … It was also UNCW's highest-ranked win since 2013 when it stunned top-ranked North Carolina … Ryan Jeffers saw his 10-game hitting strak halted as well as his consecutive games on base streak at 26 … UNCW starting pitcher Breydan Gorham made his first appearance since his freshman season against Longwood in 2016 … All three wins this season have been by the score of 5-4 … Mason Berne has hit safely in all four games this season … The bottom three hitters of the UNCW lineup combined to go 7-11 with four runs batted in … The Seahawk bullpen combined to limit the Tar Heels to a run on two hits and four walks over the final 5.1 innings.
