Seahawks Close Weekend With Split

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – Junior Lacey Fox collected three hits and drove in two runs as UNCW earned a split of its two games to close out the Charlotte First Pitch Classic at Daughtridge Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who completed their opening weekend with a 2-2 record, defeated Radford by a 6-2 margin in the first game of their doubleheader before dropping a 7-3 decision against the host 49ers in the tournament finale.

Fox, who finished the weekend with five hits, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the win over Radford while driving in two more runs before going 1-for-3 against Charlotte.

Sophomore Meghan Whitecavage slugged her first home run of the season in the Radford win with a two-run shot down the left field line in the fourth inning.

Senior Kelsey Bryan added three hits against Radford while scoring three times while junior Kali Jones went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Junior Laurel Koontz earned her first win of the season in the circle against Radford, scattering four hits over the final four innings with four strikeouts.

Key Moment vs. Radford: UNCW surged to an early 5-0 lead in the first two innings, scoring twice in the opening frame before adding three more runs in the second. Fox drove in a run with a single in the first inning before adding a RBI double in the second frame.    

Key Moment vs. Charlotte: Charlotte overcame a 3-1 deficit by scoring six unanswered runs over a two-inning span. The 49ers tallied four runs on four hits in the fourth inning before adding two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Coach Kristy Norton Says: "We had a better performance from start to finish today, but we need to figure out a way to win consecutive games from here on out."     

Up Next: The Seahawks commence their home schedule next weekend by welcoming Maine, Bucknell and Longwood to Boseman Field for the Seahawk Softball Classic.
