Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Runnin' Bulldogs Hold Off Seahawks

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina – Gardner-Webb used a different twist out of its playbook – accurate three-point shooting – to fashion an early lead and then held on to slip past UNCW, 81-72, in the second of three games for the Seahawks late Saturday at the inaugural VisitCurrituckOBX.com Battle In The Blue Ridge.

UNCW watched its two-game winning streak go by the wayside and fell to 2-4 on the season. GWU now stands 2-4 on the new campaign.

Redshirt sophomore guard Nate Johnson and freshman forward Jose Perez scored 20 points apiece to top four players in double figures for GWU. Redshirt junior forward David Efianayi added 17 and sophomore point guard Jaheam Cornwall finished with 12.

Redshirt junior forward Jeantal Cylla paced the Seahawks with a career-high 22 points, followed by redshirt junior guard Ty Taylor with 12 and freshman playmaker Kai Toews with 11.

The Runnin' Bulldogs drained 7-of-14 triples in the first half and capitalized on UNCW's early foul trouble to race out to a 42-27 lead at halftime before turning back several runs by the Seahawks after intermission.

GWU entered the game averaging just over seven three-pointers per game, but buried 12-of-24 attempts to move to 1-1 in the four-team event. Johnson sank 5-of-7 trifectas and Efianayi and Perez sank three each in the long distance barrage.

UNCW closed the deficit to six points with just over two minutes remaining, but the Runnin' Bulldogs answered every Seahawk rally down the stretch to claim the first meeting between the two schools.

The Seahawks led by six points early, but inside mainstay Devontae Cacok picked up his second foul with 8:24 on the clock and went to the bench. GWU capitalized on Cacok's absence and outscored the Seahawks, 22-9, the rest of the period to grab control.

Cacok, who had just two points and no rebounds in the first half, fouled out with 3:16 left in the contest and finished with nine points and three rebounds in just 17 minutes on the court.

Perez was the catalyst in the first half for the Runnin' Bulldogs, hitting 5-of-8 field goals and drained his second three-pointer of the night with 10 seconds left in the period to give GWU its 15-point cushion at the break.

KEY MOMENT: After Jeantal Cylla converted a conventional three-point play to tighten the score to 57-48 with 8:56 remaining, GWU's Jose Perez sank his third trifecta of the game to extend the margin back to 60-48.

CAREER NIGHT: Redshirt junior forward Jeantal Cylla went 7-for-10 from the floor, 5-for-7 behind the arc and 3-for-5 at the charity stripe en route to a career-high 22 points. He also led the team with seven rebounds.

POINTS OFF TURNOVERS: The Seahawks committed 17 turnovers and the Runnin' Bulldogs scored 19 points off those miscues.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS: GWU's 13 three-point field goals matched Campbell (Nov. 6, 2018) for the most against the Seahawks this season.

QUOTABLE: "We got off to a decent start, but then the fouls started mounting. They were attacking us and putting us into a position to foul. We only had four offensive rebounds and that was very uncharacteristic for us."--UNCW Head Coach C.B. McGrath

NEXT UP: UNCW returns to the U.S. Cellular Center on Sunday for a 1 p.m. tip-off against Eastern Illinois, another first-time opponent for the Seahawks. The Panthers are 2-0 in the event with wins over Gardner-Webb and Arkansas State.
