Seahawks Pound Peace In Final Tune-Up

Box Score

WILMINGTON, North Carolina
– UNCW jumped out to a comfortable early lead and then opened the second half with a 16-2 run to cruise past pesky NCAA Division III William Peace, 80-52, in the second and final exhibition of the 2018-19 preseason for the Seahawks on Friday at Trask Coliseum.

Coach C.B. McGrath's club kicks off the new season at Campbell on Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the 104th meeting between the two schools.

Junior guard Jaylen Fornes of UNCW led all scorers with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Redshirt junior forward Jeantal Cylla had 14, senior forward Devontae Cacok pumped in 13 and redshirt junior guard Ty Taylor finished with 10 for the Seahawks.

Sophomore guard Smith Gupton was the only player in double digits for the Pacers with 15 points.

In Friday's tune-up, the Seahawks scored the first nine points of the contest and were off to the races early. Fornes got things started with a triple from the left corner and Cacok capped the early spurt with a layup to give the home team a quick 9-0 lead just 2:42 into the game.

The lead ballooned to 20-4 as the Seahawks converted nine of their first 13 field goal attempts. William Peace, meanwhile, missed nine of its first 10 shots to fall into a deep hole.

The margin crept to double digits on a baseline jumper by graduate forward Shawn O'Connell and a 14-2 run increased the lead to 29-6 at the eight-minute mark before the Pacers strung together 11 consecutive points.

William Peace went into intermission trailing, 36-27, despite shooting 25 percent and making just 2-of-14 behind the arc.

But the Seahawks came out of the locker room fired up and scored the first 10 points of the second half in a 16-2 spurt that sealed the deal. UNCW recorded its largest lead of the game, 80-49, with 1:04 remaining on a three-pointer in front of the Seahawk bench by junior transfer Ty Gadsden.

FAMILIAR STAT: Senior forward Devontae Cacok had 22 double-doubles one year ago and the Riverdale, Ga., product was at it again on Friday, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 boards. He nailed down the double-double on a driving layup with 6:51 left to play.

DOWN BUT NOT OUT: William Peace scored 11 unanswered points late in the first half and used a 21-5 run to climb within seven points with 2:43 left in the opening period.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS: Freshman guard Kai Toews wound up with nine assists – more than the entire William Peace team (8).

FULL HOUSE: All 14 players saw action for the Seahawks and 11 found the scoring column.

KEY MOMENT: After William Peace sliced UNCW's early lead to 34-27, Ty Taylor made a steal and converted the layup with 29 seconds left in the first half to give the Seahawks a 36-27 edge at the break.

QUOTABLE: "I told them the last 13 minutes of the first half was the most selfish basketball I've seen in a long time. It made my stomach sick." – UNCW Head Coach C.B. McGrath

NEXT UP: UNCW christens the 2018-19 season on Tuesday by playing in-state rival Campbell at Pope Arena in Buies Creek, N.C. Tip-off time is set for 7:30 p.m.
