Hofstra Rallies to Edge UNCW for 2-1 Victory

HEMPSTEAD, New York – Senior Kristin Desmond scored two goals to lead Hofstra to a 2-1 comeback victory over UNCW in a Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer contest at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The win elevated the Pride's record to 6-3-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the CAA. Meanwhile, UNCW's record dips to 4-6-2 overall with a 0-1-1 mark in league play.

The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when sophomore Dominique Martinez netted the first goal of her college career off assists from redshirt freshman Nikki Cox and senior Serenity Waters.

But, Hofstra answered less than a minute later when Desmond tallied her fifth goal of the year after settling a crossing pass from Jen Buoncore and scoring on a shot past freshman goalkeeper Sydney Schneider.

Desmond broke the deadlock at the 56:12 mark when she converted a penalty kick past Schneider after the Seahawks were called for a foul inside the penalty area.

Schneider made two saves in the loss for UNCW, which held a 12-9 advantage in shots along with a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Ashley Wilson tallied four saves in the second half to aid in the Pride's victory after senior Jenna Borreson did not make a save in the first half.

Coach Paul Cairney Says: "I am very proud of our team effort today. However, as a young team, we need to learn that the small details can add up to big moments. It was great for us to score the first goal, but this is the second game where we gave up a goal too easily soon after. Our work rate and our effort are really getting better and we simply need to learn how to play in tight games and grind out a victory."

Game Notes:
  • Hofstra ended a three-game winless streak against the Seahawks while improving to 13-5-2 all-time against UNCW.
  • The Seahawks became the first team to score a goal against Hofstra since Sept. 4 when Yale edged the Pride by a 3-2 margin.
  • Martinez became the sixth different UNCW player to score a goal this season.
  • Seven of the Seahawks' 12 games this season have been decided by one goal or less.

Up Next: The Seahawks return home on Thursday, Sept. 28, to welcome James Madison to UNCW Soccer Stadium for a 7 p.m. CAA contest.
