WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman midfielder
Molly McGarry scored two goals in the first half to lead UNCW past Campbell for a 2-1 victory in the Seahawks' non-conference finale at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win allowed the Seahawks to elevate their record to 4-5-1 on the season. Campbell drops to 4-4-0 after suffering its second consecutive one-goal loss.
McGarry wasted little time in giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead when she headed in a corner kick from senior forward
Serenity Waters just one minute into the first half.
With 2:54 remaining in the opening stanza, McGarry struck again on a header off a corner kick from redshirt sophomore forward
Olivia Szeker-Cortes, upping the Seahawks' advantage to 2-0 at the intermission.
Campbell ended the Seahawks' shutout bid in the 57th minute when freshman Siara Southerland took advantage of a breakaway opportunity and scored her second goal of the season past freshman goalkeeper
Sydney Schneider.
However, Schneider and the Seahawks limited the Camels to just two shots in the final 33 minutes to secure the victory.
Schneider made two saves in the victory for UNCW, which outshot Campbell by a 12-6 margin.
Game Notes:
- The Seahawks have won seven consecutive games against the Camels and hold an 11-3-0 advantage in the series. During the seven-game win streak, UNCW has outscored its in-state foe by a 15-2 count.
- McGarry's goal is the fastest by the Seahawks to open a game since Kelly Renkin scored just 59 seconds into UNCW's game against Gardner-Webb during the 2008 season.
- UNCW is now 3-2-1 this year in games decided by one goal or less.
- UNCW scored two goals for the third time this year, winning each of those contests. The Seahawks are now 18-0-2 in their last 20 outings when scoring at least two goals.
- McGarry, who netted her first career game-winning goal, became the first UNCW player to score two goals in a game since Waters had two goals in a win over Elon on Oct. 23, 2016.
Up Next: The Seahawks begin Colonial Athletic Association play on Thursday, Sept. 21, with a 7 p.m. contest at Elon.
