Seahawks Hold Off North Florida for 3-2 Victory

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – UNCW jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held off a late rally by North Florida as the Seahawks posted a 3-2 victory over the Ospreys at the Mike Gibbs Tournament at Hodges Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Seahawks, who improved to 2-0-0 on the season, secured the tournament title after victories over North Florida and Jacksonville. North Florida, which blanked Campbell in its tournament opener on Friday, drops to 1-1-0.

Freshman defender Hjalmar Ekdal gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute when he took a pass from Kalvin Kromer and scored his first goal of the season on a shot to the left side.

Sophomore midfielder Phillip Goodrum upped the margin to 2-0 with 28:19 remaining when he scored off a throw-in from Kromer. Less than three minutes, junior midfielder Ben Fisher added a goal after a pass from Goodrum to extend the Seahawks' lead.

But, North Florida answered with two goals in the final four minutes to trim the deficit to 3-2. Adrian Nunez ended the Seahawks' shutout bid with 3:08 remaining by converting a corner kick from Collin Scott before blasting a free kick past UNCW goalkeeper Ryan Cretens with 1.4 seconds remaining.

Cretens made five saves for the Seahawks, who were outshot by an 11-7 margin.

Game Notes:
  • UNCW leads the all-time series by a 2-0-0 margin and has outscored North Florida by an 8-3 count in those games.
  • UNCW is off to a 2-0-0 start for the fourth time in the last five years.
  • Kromer posted a career-high two assists in Sunday's win over North Florida. He is the first UNCW player to record two or more assists in a game since Ben Fisher had two assists against Campbell on Aug. 26, 2016.
  • Goodrum tallied a career-high three points after scoring a goal with an assist.
  • The Seahawks scored three or more goals for the first time since defeating Hofstra, 3-1, on Oct. 15, 2016.
