Baseball Takes Series Opener From Blue Hens, 16-5

 
WILMINGTON, North CarolinaNick Feight had four hits, including his 11th home run of the season, as UNCW ran past visiting Delaware, 16-5, in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks posted their second consecutive win while moving to 20-21 overall and 8-5 in the conference. UD, meanwhile, slipped to 23-16 and 9-7. With the win, the Seahawks moved into third-place in the conference, by holding the tiebreaker over William & Mary, which beat Towson on Friday.

Feight powered a UNCW offense that scored in seven of eight innings, including each inning from the third on. Adding three hits was Ryan Jeffers while Brian Mims and Casey Golden both finished with two hits and two runs batted in.

Alex Royalty (7-2) won his league-leading seventh game and his fourth straight. Royalty struggled in the third inning before settling down and allowing just one hit over his final four innings. He finished with nine strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Kevin Mohollen, Jeremy Ake and Diaz Nardo all finished with two hits. Mohollen scored twice while Nardo knocked in two runs.

UD starter Nick Spadafino (4-2) allowed seven runs, just three earned, one nine hits over 4.1 innings.

Up next: The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. A reminder, Sunday's game has been moved to 1 p.m.

How it happened: Casey Golden delivered a two-out two-run single off Spadafino in the fourth inning to give UNCW a 6-4 lead it would not lose.

Inside the box score: The Seahawks landed their leadoff hitter on base in five innings for the second straight game … Mason Berne and Terence Connelly had bases-loaded singles for UNCW … The Seahawks advanced runners in 20-of-29 opportunities … UNCW finished 7-for-15 with RISP.
