PDF Box Score | UNCW Postgame Comments | UVa Postgame Comments

ORLANDO, Florida –
Fifth-seeded Virginia used two big runs, including a 10-0 spurt midway through the second half, to slip past No. 12-seeded UNCW, 76-71, in the first-round of the NCAA's Orlando Men's Basketball Regional early Thursday at the Amway Center.

The Cavaliers, 23-10, advanced to Saturday's second-round game and will play No. 4-seeded Florida on Saturday. The Gators topped East Tennessee State, 80-65, in the final game of the first session in Orlando.

The Seahawks closed out their historic season with a 29-6 record, setting numerous individual and team records. Coach Kevin Keatts and the Seahawks were making the school's second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and ninth overall.

"I thought it was a well-played basketball game," said Keatts, who was coaching his 100th game for the Seahawks on Thursday. "I thought we did a great job in the first 10 minutes of the half, and then Virginia did a great job closing the half out.

"Basketball is game of runs. I thought we made a great run early in the first half, and I thought they did a great job answering. Our guys expected to win the game. They played well in the second half, so did we. I think you take a couple free throws out of it, take two or three of those freaky plays out, and we might be in another situation.

"I think the difference in the game is they made a couple plays towards the end, and we missed a few chippies. I thought our offensive game plan was great. It was a great college basketball game, and I thought Virginia made a few more plays than us."

Virginia senior guard London Perrantes led all scorers with 24 points and erupted for 19 after intermission. Junior guard Marial Shayok poured in a career-high 23 points and redshirt junior guard Darius Thompson finished with 10 for the Cavaliers.

Senior guard Chris Flemmings anchored four Seahawks in double digits with 18 points in his final collegiate game. Backcourt mate Denzel Ingram collected 17 points, graduate guard Ambrose Mosley contributed 14 and sophomore forward Devontae Cacok wound up with his 13th double-double of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

The Seahawks jumped out to a double-digit lead early, watched as Virginia rallied for a 30-29 edge at halftime and then worked the contest into a one possession game with just under a minute remaining before the Cavaliers notched their fourth win vs. UNCW in as many tries.

The slippery Perrantes made a layup as the shot clock expired with 1:31 left to give Virginia a 71-66 advantage, but Flemmings swished a trifecta on the right wing 20 seconds later to slice the margin to 71-69.

A pair of free throws by Thompson with 1:09 to go extended the lead back to 73-69 before Cacok converted a layup to close the deficit to 73-71 with 53 seconds left.

But Shayok, who made 8-of-14 field goals, connected on a jumper to get the margin back to 75-71 and the Seahawks committed a turnover with 15.7 seconds left, allowing the Cavaliers to move on.

Virginia shot 50 percent on the day on 26-of-52 field goals and UNCW finished at 41.0 percent behind 25-of-61 shots. UVa's bench outscored the Seahawks' reserves, 28-2.

The Seahawks, behind Mosley's hot shooting, came out firing with their patented long distance attack and put the 'Hoos on their heels early.

After a driving layup by Perrantes cut UNCW's early margin to 15-11 at 11:25, the Seahawks outscored the Cavaliers16-2 over the next seven minutes to bolt out to a 15-point cushion.

Cacok started the run with a monster dunk and Ingram's triple from the top of the key with 7:23 left in the first half pushed the Seahawks' lead to 26-11.

Still trailing, 28-14, Virginia roared back with a 12-0 run over a 2:19 stretch to cut into UNCW's margin and then took a 30-29 lead into intermission on a layup by Thompson with 43 seconds left in the period.

The Seahawks did not score in the last 3:20 of the opening half and Virginia capitalized by shooting 50 percent on 12-of-24 from the field. Flemmings and C.J. Bryce, UNCW's leading scorer, both did not score in the first stanza.

Mosley canned all four of his shots in the first 12 minutes of the contest, including 3-for-3 from deep.
