CAA-Leading Elon Defeats Seahawks, 66-56

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Led by a near triple-double performance from junior guard Shay Burnett, Elon extended its win streak to five straight games by posting a 66-56 victory over UNCW in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at Trask Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.

The Phoenix, who lead the CAA with a 10-1 league mark, upped their record to 18-5 overall while the Seahawks dropped to 8-14 overall and 3-8 in the CAA.

Burnett, who posted her sixth double-double of the season, led Elon to the victory after scoring 23 points, including the 1,000th point of her career, with 12 rebounds and eight assists. The Graham, N.C., product knocked down 8-of-14 shots from the floor, including a 3-for-5 effort from three-point range, while converting 4-of-8 free throws.
  Senior forward Jenifer Rhodes added 13 points with seven rebounds while senior guard Lauren Brown chipped in 10 points.

Redshirt senior guard Jasmine Steele led four UNCW players in double figures by scoring 14 points while collecting a career-high nine assists. Junior guard Madison Raque and redshirt junior forward Jenny DeGraaf each tallied 12 points while freshman guard Timber Tate notched 11 points.  

Key Moment: Elon, which led by just one point after the first quarter, outscored UNCW by a 14-5 margin in the first 6:40 of the second quarter to take a 30-20 advantage. The Seahawks trimmed the margin to 30-25 before the Phoenix pulled away with a 15-4 spurt for a 45-29 lead they did not relinquish.

Game Notes: Elon earned its fourth straight win over the Seahawks and upped its series advantage to 8-5 … The Phoenix have won four of the six meetings between the two teams since joining the CAA for the 2014-15 season … Elon outrebounded UNCW by a 45-30 margin, including a 17-5 edge on the offensive end … The Phoenix used their 17 offensive rebounds to produce 16 second chance points … The Phoenix tallied 34 of their 66 points in the paint … UNCW had four players score in double figures for the fourth time this season … Redshirt senior forward Jordan Henry led UNCW with 11 rebounds, marking her fourth double-digit rebounding effort in the last six games … Steele also set a career high with four steals against Elon … UNCW is now 5-7 at home this season … The Seahawks are now 4-20 all-time in games played on Super Bowl Sunday.
