Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Seahawks Fall To Phoenix In Opening Game Of Road Trip

ELON, North Carolina – Senior guard Chris Flemmings was stripped of the ball as he penetrated to the basket and pesky Elon held on to edge first place UNCW, 77-76, in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball matinee Saturday afternoon at cozy Alumni Gym.

The Phoenix (16-11, 8-6) snapped a two-game losing streak and earned a split of the regular season series with their North Carolina partner in the CAA. The Seahawks (22-5, 11-3) had a two-game winning streak snapped and fell in the first leg of a three-game road swing.

Junior forward Brian Dawkins led all scorers with 24 points and got help from four other Phoenix players in double figures. Sophomore forward Tyler Seibring collected 14 points, sophomore guard Dainan Swope chipped in 13 and junior guard Dmitri Thompson and senior guard Luke Eddy had 10 points apiece.

Junior playmaker Jordon Talley came off the bench to pace the Seahawks in scoring with 20 points, one off his career-high, including 17 in the first half. Sophomore guard C.J. Bryce added 19, senior guard Denzel Ingram scored 17 and Flemmings had 12 as the Seahawks placed four men in double figures for the 19th time in 27 games.

"I thought we had too many breakdowns in the second half," said third-year UNCW Head Coach Kevin Keatts. "One of the keys for us was to guard the three-point line. We did a very good job in the first half by holding them to four made. But in the second half we had too many breakdowns in communication and they made six in the second half.

'I didn't think we did a good job of communicating and you get the result that you get when that happens on the defensive end. Our breakdown in communication was the major problem.

"Both teams fought hard and it was a great game all the way down to the wire…and all the way to the last second. When you're playing a good team on their home floor, you can't give them 10 three's. That's 30 of their points from behind the three-point line."

UNCW had a pair of chances to win the game in the waning seconds, but couldn't cash in against Elon's stingy defense. The Seahawks missed a game-winning attempt with seven seconds on the clock before Flemmings sliced into the paint and had the ball swiped away by Dawkins in traffic.

Elon rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit – only the second team to accomplish the feat against the Seahawks this season – by limiting UNCW to 38.2 percent shooting in the second period. The Phoenix, meanwhile, shot 46.7 percent after the break, including 6-of-12 from long distance.

In a back and forth second half, the Seahawks still led, 74-72, after Ambrose Mosley's lone triple of the day with 2:17 remaining.

However, Swope sank a long three on the left wing on the next possession and Eddy converted a layup with 1:22 on the clock to give the Phoenix a 77-74 edge.

Bryce carved through the lane for a layup with 46 seconds left to close the deficit to 77-76 before Seibring missed a three-point attempt with 21 seconds remaining, setting up a wild finish before the a raucous crowd.

"We wanted to get something at the rim, and they took it away," Keatts said. "Chris popped out on the wing. He had a great rip, but they did a good job of raking in. He had a good drive to the basket."

Talley and Ingram combined for 32 of UNCW's 46 points as the Seahawks raced out to a 46-38 advantage at halftime. Talley made 7-of-11 field goals, including all three of his triple attempts, and Ingram canned 6-of-10 shots as UNCW rolled early following a sluggish start.

"I thought Jordon was tremendous," said Keatts. "He played a little out of his comfortable zone. He's been playing well the last couple games. He was the bright spot for us in the first half. He did a good job of helping us get the lead at halftime."

The Seahawks missed their first four shots before getting untracked behind Ingram early and Talley late in the period.

The slippery Ingram netted UNCW's first eight points and his second straight three-pointer with 16:24 left in the first half tied the game at 8-all.

Talley then took over off the bench, making back-to-back buckets, including a layup down Broadway that gave UNCW its first lead of the game, 12-10, at the 13:44 mark.

The Seahawks later posted their largest lead of the half for the first time with 57 seconds left when Talley drained his third trifecta in the opening 20 minutes in front of the Elon bench for a 44-36 advantage. The playmaker from Richmond, Va., then added a tip-in with six seconds left in the period as UNCW took a 46-38 lead into the break.

The Phoenix made 9-of-11 free throws at the foul line for big advantage at the charity stripe. The Seahawks attempted just two free throws on the day when Flemmings missed two free throws at the 11-minute mark.

UNCW continues its three-game road trip by traveling north to play Northeastern and Hofstra. The Seahawks face the Huskies for the first time this season and the first of two meetings in the final four games on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.

Elon also heads out on the road, visiting Towson on Thursday and Drexel on Saturday in its final two road games of the regular campaign.
