Elveroth's Golden Goal Lifts Seahawks to CAA Title Game

HARRISONBURG, Virginia – Freshman forward Emil Elveroth's goal with 2.9 seconds remaining in the first overtime period lifted second-seeded UNCW to the Colonial Athletic Assocation men's soccer championship game with a 2-1 victory over third-seeded College of Charleston at Sentara Park on Friday evening.

The win upped the Seahawks' record to 11-6-0 while Charleston's record dropped to 8-6-4.

With time winding down in the first overtime period, sophomore forward Phillip Goodrum took a shot that was stopped by senior goalkeeper Kevin Shields. Elveroth, a Third-Team All-CAA selection, collected the rebound and scored his fifth goal of the season on a shot from inside the six-yard box.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when sophomore midfielder Tucker Heffron blasted home his fourth goal of the season off assists from freshman midfielder Jake Nicholson and senior goalkeeper Kevin Shields.

UNCW evened the score at 1-1 with 29:23 remaining in regulation when redshirt senior forward Julio Moncada knocked in header passes from Elveroth and senior midfielder Kalvin Kromer, netting his fourth goal of the season.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Ryan Cretens notched three saves for the Seahawks, who outshot Charleston by a 13-8 margin.

Shields made five saves in a losing effort for the Cougars, who defeated UNCW by a 2-1 margin on Oct. 11 in Wilmington.

Up Next: The Seahawks, who advance to the CAA championship game for the first time since 2009, will face either William & Mary or James Madison on Sunday at 1 p.m.
